The Space In Between
I firmly believe that all the magic in this world
Every wonder and sense of awe
Lies within the spaces in between
The way my mouth drools at the seams
Before taking a bite from
That vanilla ice cream
The count down
Before the big drop
on my favourite roller coaster
From that carnival down town
its that feeling I can’t escape
when we watch that new superhero movie
And we both know that the girl gets saved
by the guy in the cape
when you pin that wide angle smile
for the flash of the polaroid
You always did have a thing for mundane memories
it was always your lifestyle
every now and then
Its the goosebumps that linger on your skin
when the chorus of our favourite song plays
the playlist left on repeat time and again
You see I believe that all the magic in this world
Every wonder and sense of awe
Lies within the spaces in between
The unsettling pause
in the space suspended between our lips
Before a good night kiss
Like the closing act to a show with no applause
on drunken nights
in the gap between us at the booth
Before I tell you to come a bit closer
As we take in all the night lights
In the way my heart starts to race
As I utter the words “I love you”
With batted eyelashes and a whisper
and I always say it twice just in case
The way I let you feel my eyes upon you
as I trace your every outline
suspense with every second that passes
Hoping that my gaze isn’t misconstrued
its in the way you glow
Before every hello
its the way you cast your charm
Before every embrace
Or whenever I have you in my arms
the preparatory butterflies
To every poem performed for you
The thought that out of all the beautiful things in this world
You are ultimately my demise
You see
This is where I want to be
my innate desire and dream
To be caught up with you
In the space in between
